Zoomin' past the beach road

I kinda for the first time attempted the bulb exposures with long shutterlag to capture some of the night traffic in Chennai.... My tripod kind of broke !! :(
And I managed to capture few decent images as like this one... wait for the rest of the images of this series in the coming weeks! Need more inputs from all of you!

thts a nice co-incidence chiru....see my blog.....still figuring a way out for noise reduction without reducing accutance...will post another one which is much better in a few days...

I'm too inexperienced to talk about noise reduction, we have far shorter daylight times here so I get confronted with longer shuttertimes and discover that pictures aren't that crisp anymore. My belief up to now is that it's better to have a long shutter time and maybe a tripod with ISO minimal, than a high ISO and shooting out of hand. I dislike noise more than movement blur. Pictures such as these are a real challenge, I never made one but I 'm gonna try soon! A river of light!

Sweet shot, did you use a fill-in flash to capture the biker to the side, or did he just stay really still?

@DaveB: Thanks! He was actually too still! And I was lucky get such a reference point which highlighted the contrasting speed of the moving objects!

Your composition here is tops, but noise is always a problem with digitals and long exposures. My D70 has a long exposure noise reduction facility in the menu, which I guess your D50 has, and I guess also that it was already on. I have used 'Neat Image' with good results for this BTW. Exposure is irrelevant, as it can only be guessed at anyway, so try out various timings and apertures. Also, neutralize the in-camera sharpening, saturation, contrast (leave that to Photoshop or whatever you use), choose a low ISO setting, shoot RAW rather than JPG, always have a very sturdy tripod with you, and be patient.

For your first go at this, this is an excellent result.

I really like your pictures in general! Especially your portraits...
this one is a bit too bright for me... just take it with 4 sec or sth... and maybe from a position further away... or do it with a flash, showing a riksha or sth...

I feel the speed, and the red adds to it, I'm mesmerized...Is that a cop to the left about to go after the speed transgressor? LOL This photo is about SPEED and it really translates it well, so keep it up!

@Lorraine: Thanks Lorraine! He is not a cop.... this Guy I guess stopped by to answer a call on his mobile. Thankgod that he was still and that virtually became my reference point to show the speed! This was shot at a low ISO and the mist and smoke kind of added a bit of noise. On the top black portion of the image, I guess there is not any noise... But I guess I should have closed the shutter a couple of seconds before! Hmmm still striving to improve... : ) !

A broken tri-pod is never a good thing, especially if the camera is on it when it breaks.
